Review: Klairs Supple Preparation UNSCENTED Toner (What's the Difference with the Original Version?)

The OG Klairs toner is one of my favourite skincare products of all time, so I was super curious to find out how the Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner version will rank up beside it. A little sneak peek? It's just as good- or for some people, it may even be better.

Ingredients

The main difference between the unscented toner and the original is right there in the title. There are no fragrances or essential oils added in the new unscented toner. In the original version, the essential oils are used to give a lovely light herbal scent, and also add some healing, soothing and antibacterial properties. However, some people may want to avoid essential oils as their skin is sensitive to them.

Other than omitting fragrance and essential oils, the unscented version is still pretty similar to the original one. This toner also has a star-studded ingredient list that is perfect for all skin types, and features a soothing blend of plant based extracts, along with hydrating hyaluronic acid, and calming centella asiatica to help reduce inflammation, hydrate, soothe, and protect the skin.

Packaging

The unscented version is packaged in the same carton box and plastic bottle as the original formula, but with a different color. This toner comes with a clear bottle, which I really like because I can easily see how much toner is left and prepare for a restock!

Scent

Klairs states that this toner is “unscented”, but what they really mean is that there is no added fragrance or essential oils. This toner does have a medicinal scent (don't worry, it fades away) that comes from the existing ingredients.

Texture

Similar to the original, the unscented version has a slightly thicker-than-water consistency that absorbs beautifully to the skin. As usual, I use my hands to apply a generous amount to my face and pat it in. The only slight difference is that the unscented version has a more lightweight texture that absorbs faster to the skin. So for this toner, I will sometimes apply up to seven layers if my skin feels particularly dry or sensitive, and there will still be no problem layering other products over it.

Results

This toner is very similar to the original in terms of its texture and performance, and is all around a fantastic toner! It does what it says, it’s moisturising and hydrating and also made my skin plumper, smoother and brighter.

If you loved the original version and its scent, you can still get the Original one. Personally, I never had issues with that scent or the oils. But if you have sensitive skin that cannot use essential oils or you dislike added fragrance, the Unscented version is probably the one for you!

Below is a criteria from the Klairs website that you can always reference to when you are deciding between the two versions of the toner:

If you are…

  • Sensitive to fragrance or essential oil = Unscented

  • Prefer skincare products with some fragrance = Original

  • Prefer lightweight and fast absorbing toner = Unscented

  • Enjoy natural fragrance or essential oil = Original
