5 Ways to Make Your Skin Less Oily
Want to know the secrets to getting rid of oily skin once and for all? Here are some of the best ways to reduce oiliness and keep your skin looking shine-free!
Trust me, those blotting papers won’t last you forever. As someone who has personally struggled with oily skin for a huge chunk of my life, I know the pain of applying your full face of foundation in the morning, only to have it look shiny (and not the good kind of shiny) within minutes of walking out the door.
To get rid of oily skin once and for all, here are six tips you can try that has helped me keep oily skin at bay:
1. Double Cleanse
If you haven’t already, it’s time to invest in a good oil cleanser for your double cleansing routine. Contrary to popular belief, oil-based products will not make your skin even oilier! Think about it this way: Water attracts water, and oil attracts oil. You need an oil cleanser to properly break down excess oil without leaving your skin dry and tight.
A gentle one to try is the Banila Co Clean It Zero Resveratrol, a balm cleanser especially made for oily skin. It dissolves makeup, excess sebum, as well as any other impurities with ease without leaving any greasy or heavy feeling.
2. Exfoliate regularly
In addition to smoothing, preventing breakouts and improving skin tone, exfoliation also enhances the skin’s receptiveness of oil-controlling ingredients. Chemical exfoliators are especially good for oily skin types, since they help effectively deep clean pores to make sure they’re free of dirt and excess oil.
The Benton Aloe BHA Toner is a gentle yet effective product that will exfoliate the skin while also preparing it for the rest of your routine. Salicylic acid (BHA) reduce sebum and leave skin smoother and less oily, while aloe and snail mucin soothe and moisturise skin.
3. Moisturise your skin
If you’ve used moisturisers before and felt that they just leave your skin feeling more greasy, that might be because you were not using the right one for your skin type. Look for a lightweight moisturiser like the COSRX Oil-Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion that deeply hydrate the skin without making it feel greasy. Moisturising will decrease excess oil over time and make your skin more balanced and nourished.
4. Clay mask
Oily skin types should consider using a weekly clay mask or clay foaming cleanser. Clay draws out oil and impurities from the skin, while reducing oil production. But remember to stick with moisturising clay masks that won’t strip the skin of moisture.
5. Consider your diet
Admit it, we all know how bad food high in fats, sugars, and unhealthy oils can be for our skin, but we still eat them anyways. So instead of reaching for a Bubble tea next time (which is a dairy product and very high in sugar—two oil and acne triggers), consider loading up on healthier options like green tea and juices that can actually help keep your oily skin in control.
