The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty Free and Vegan-Friendly Korean Beauty Products

What is a "cruelty-free" or "vegan" skin care product?

Cruelty-free means that no form of animal testing has been done at any point in the creation of a brand’s products, while vegan-friendly skin care eliminates all animal ingredients, or animal-derived ingredients, including egg, milk, snail extracts, or any other animal product.

So keep in mind that vegan is not synonymous with cruelty-free, because it is possible for a product to be vegan, but not cruelty-free and vice versa.

Hidden ingredients to look out for if you’re a vegan:

  1. Lanolin: Lanolin is made from the fatty substance found naturally on sheep’s wool, and is a common ingredient used for its moisturising and healing properties.
  2. Bee products: Keep an eye out for bee products such as beeswax, honey, propolis and royal jelly, which are used in many natural skincare and beauty products, as they’re highly moisturising and full of antioxidants.
  3. Squalene: This powerful ingredient with anti-ageing properties is extracted from shark liver oil, and is commonly used in lip balms and moisturisers. Vegan squalene exists and is derived from olives and wheat germ.
  4. Collagen: Used in lots of anti-ageing products, this fibrous protein is usually derived from animal tissue.
  5. Hyaluronic acid: Known for its power to hydrate and plump your skin, hyaluronic acid is commonly derived from rooster combs, or the red crown that mounts the head of a rooster. However, keep in mind that not all hyaluronic acid is animal-derived, and the very same ingredient can also be manufactured via biofermentation. When in doubt about a certain product, get in touch with the brand's customer service team.

So which Korean beauty companies are cruelty free and vegan, or have vegan products?

Even though K-beauty is well-known for products with snail mucin, bee venom, horse oil and other animal derived ingredients, there are also loads of cruelty free and vegan-friendly options. If you are trying to cut out animal products from your routine, here are some of our favourite vegan and cruelty-free Korean beauty brands and products you should check out:

1. Aromatica

Aromatica at Nudie Glow Best Korean Beauty Store Australia

Aromatica is, in many ways, the gold standard for Korean organic and all-natural skincare products. Other than its ECOCERT Certification, Aromatica is also the only Korean brand to earn EWG’s Skin-deep Champion Status, an accolade awarded to toxin-free beauty brands. Aromatica is a cruelty-free brand, and most of its popular products are also vegan. Those that are will be clearly marked as such on their website.

TOP 2 Cruelty Free and Vegan Aromatica Products:

Other than being a cruelty-free brand that does not test on animals, all of Klairs’s products are also vegan-friendly with the exception of its Manuka Honey & Choco Body Soap and the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream. Klairs explained that honey was added to the body soap formulation because of its added effectiveness and could not be replaced. The calming cream contains beeswax, which the company also attempted to remove, but could not as it changes the texture of the product.

@Faridah Nothing in the Klairs line contains pork or any pork derivatives, or anything else that isn’t considered vegetarian. The only animal-derived ingredients used in several products are honey &/ or beeswax; those products are specifically listed above in the brand description. Hope that helps!
